On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the President of Estonia, Mr. Alar Karis, together with his wife Sirje Karis and a delegation from the Estonian Health Ecosystem, visited the Utrecht Science Park. During the visit, much knowledge was exchanged and valuable connections were made.

Utrecht Marathon: Starting and finishing at Utrecht Science Park

On Sunday, May 31, 2026, the HiPRO Utrecht Marathon will take place, with both the start and finish at Utrecht Science Park. If you would still like to participate, be quick. The 10 km race is already sold out, and only a limited number of spots remain for the other distances.

Well attended Innovation for Health conference where Utrecht-based organizations joined forces

On Thursday, March 26, the annual Innovation for Health conference took place in the Beatrix Hall at Jaarbeurs. This leading conference in life sciences and health was held in Utrecht for the first time. Partners from Utrecht Science Park joined forces with other Utrecht-based life sciences partners and were jointly represented in the “Utrecht Pavilion.”

ZonMw grants for group leaders Den Hertog, Mattiroli, Bakkers and Van Rooij
|
|

Jeroen den Hertog, Francesca Mattiroli, Jeroen Bakkers, and Eva van Rooij, group leaders at the Hubrecht Institute, have received ZonMw Open Competition grants. The grants allow them to delve deeper into their research on RASopathies and heart regeneration. You can learn more about their projects below.

ALS gene discovery forms basis for treatment development
|
|
|
|
|
Researchers at UMC Utrecht’s ALS Center have found new genetic abnormalities that play a role in the development of ALS. As a result, the group of patients in whom the cause of the nerve and muscle disease can be pinpointed has grown from 20 to 25 percent. The finding also helps to better understand ALS and may eventually contribute to the development of targeted treatments for some of the patients.

Dies Natalis 2026 Utrecht University: Connect. Create change.

On March 26, 2026, Utrecht University celebrated its 390th Dies Natalis and 78th anniversary year. Under the theme “Sharing Knowledge, Making Impact,” connection was central. Honorary doctorates were awarded, outstanding lecturers were recognized, and the anniversary year will feature various events through October.

Utrecht Science Week: Art and science come together at the Betweter Festival on September 25

From September 25 to October 4, Utrecht Science Park will be buzzing with curiosity and discovery during the annual Utrecht Science Week. For over a week, Utrecht Science Park opens its doors to anyone interested in both applied and fundamental science.
The week kicks off with the Utrecht Science Lecture on Friday afternoon at the Accelerator, followed by the Betweter Festival on Friday evening at TivoliVredenburg, where art and science come together.

Record number of children from across the province of Utrecht meet researchers
|
|
|
|
|
A morning spent interviewing, pipetting or philosophising with researchers from Utrecht. That’s what 3,400 children from Utrecht did on the morning of Wednesday 1 April during the eleventh edition of Meet the Professor. 280 researchers from Utrecht cycled to primary schools in the city and surrounding area to show the children who they are, what they do and what sparks their curiosity. In pairs, because research is something you do together.

Looking back at the successful Utrecht Science Park Spring Café: the power of an ecosystem in setting up and running a startup

On Thursday, April 9, the Utrecht Science Park Spring Café took place at UtrechtInc. In an informal setting, colleagues, partners, and stakeholders gathered to meet and catch up on developments within the Utrecht Science Park.
During the meeting, entrepreneurship at Utrecht Science Park took center stage, featuring pitches from successful startups and an introduction by Stefan Braam of UtrechtInc.

Keep moving, important for children with cancer
|
|
|
|
|
Children with cancer, including those diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia and those undergoing stem cell transplants, often face adverse effects of their disease and treatments. For example, with loss of muscle strength, pain (including bone pain), difficulty or inability to walk, fatigue and loss of appetite. PhD student Emma den Hartog mapped the physical functioning of children with cancer at the Princess Máxima Center. She defended her thesis on March 25.

Jeroen Kingma to be the new Director of Campus & Facilities
|
|
|
|
|
As of 1 April 2026, Jeroen Kingma is the new Director of the Campus & Facilities. In this role, he will lead the Campus & Facilities department and will be responsible for policy and implementation in the areas of real estate, accommodation and facility services. Kingma currently serves as Vice Chair of the Supervisory Board at Zorggroep Tangenborgh.
